S. Korea Tops Taekwondo Medal Tally at Universiade

IZMIR, Turkey -- The five-day taekwondo competitions ended after Turkey grabbed two more gold medals and South Korea won the another at the 23rd World Universiade on Aug. 19, 2005 in Izmir.

Turkey's Zeynep Murat secured the women's 55kg title as she defeated Chang Yi-Lan of Chinese Taipei 10-9 in the final. Italy's Federica Mastrantoni and Cuba's Yanelis Yuliet Labrada Diaz shared the third-place for the bronze medals in the category.

In the men's 84kg class final, Turkey's Bahri Tanrikulu beat Italy's Mauro Sarmiento 3-2 to win the Turkish delegation's fifth gold medal in the taekwondo tournament at the Universiade. Belarus' Ihar Rasakhatski was joint third with Iran's Hamed Khamseh.

South Korea's Park Hyung-Jim defeated Mohammad Bagheri M of Iran 11-10 to win the men's 62 kg title. China's Cui Yuhong and Brazil's Marcio Wenceslau picked up one bronze each.

After the end of the five-day competitions Friday evening, South Korea topped the taekwondo medals table with five golds, two silvers and four bronzes, followed by Turkey, who had five golds, two silvers and one bronze. China stood third with two golds and one bronze.
