The Champions Repeat
Azad University Taekwondo team the winners of the 1st Asian Clubs championship in 2007 repeated as the champions two years later in the 2nd Asian Clubs Championship.
In two days of hard hitting, breath taking taekwondo championship that saw 14 teams from Iran, Korea, Bahrain, Taiwan, Kuwait, Tajikistan, Iraq and Afghanistan compete for a championship that is taking more importance as time passes.
Asian Taekwondo Clubs Championship was initiated by Dr. Dai Soon Lee, President of the Asian Taekwondo Union, and Mr. Seyed Mohammad Pouladgar, President of I.R. of Iran Taekwondo Federation and ATU Vice President, was held for the first time in 2007.
Dr. Dai Soon Lee in an interview said:" The Asian Clubs Championship has and will contribute greatly to the spread of Taekwondo not only in Asian but in the world."
"Taekwondo is an ancient sport but may be considered the sport of the era . Mankind would like to enjoy a happy and healthy daily life and Taekwondo can brig that joy and health to every person in the world. Taekwondo is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone any place and at any time. This easy accessibility increases the popularity of Taekwondo and would help Taekwondo become a sport enjoyed by people of all ages and be considered as a daily sport suitable for everyone." ATU President added.
Dr. Dai Soon Lee concluded his interview by saying:" The Asian Taekwondo Clubs Championship is very important not only for Asia but it can lay the foundation for the future of clubs championships in other continents and also eventually the World Clubs Championships."
Prof. Kyu Seok Lee, Senior Vice President and Secretary General of ATU that was the World Taekwondo Federation Technical Delegate supervising this championship also in a support interview said: "Asian Taekwondo Clubs Championship is very important to the ATU. We have to make sure this championship grows more and more every year and this can only come true if we take this championship seriously."
A day before the start of the 2nd Asian Taekwondo Clubs Championship Prof. Kyu Seok Lee in the meeting with the 30 international referees from 10 countries said:" I would like to stress on the importance of the referees' job. A wrong decision made by a referee during the course of a game can have a tremendous affect the outcome of a match and that puts a heavier responsibility on our shoulders. Taekwondo is in an important juncture at this time and we have to make sure we realize that every decision made by us can affect the future of taekwondo."
He then reminded all the referees of several points that they should keep a close eye on so the flow of the game would not be interrupted.
With the approval of the WTF, this year Electronic Protectors were used in Asian Clubs Championship which had very good results as this event did not have any protests from any of the participating teams.
After the drawing of the lots and holding the preliminary round 8 teams from Korea Republic A, Korea Republic B, Azad University, Javaneh, Manategh Naftkhiz all from I.R.of Iran, Afghanistan Kam Air, Afghanistan Kabul Bank and Taiwan advanced to the Quarter finals.
On the second day after some close and exciting matches that saw the reining champions stretch to the 5th match to beat Korea A- Azad University, Javaneh, Manategh Naftkhiz from Iran and Korea B advanced to the semi finals.
In the semis Azad University in an enticing and fascinating match was able to edge Korea B in another nail bitter 3-2 to advance to the finals, but on the other side of the draw Javaneh Taekwondo Club in a thrashing victory beat Manategh Naftkhiz
4-1 to march into the final.
In the final on one side there was Azad University who had just barely edged its last 2 opponents to sneak into the finals and the new comer that had beat all its opponents soundly.
It looked as if there was going to be a lopsided match and the champions were going to be dethroned by the new favorite but once again in a dramatic fashion it was an experienced Azad University team that was able to edge past a young but energized and potent Javaneh that was coached by front running candidate for a vacant head coaching position in a National Junior Taem.
In the match to produce the third place team Manategh Naftkhiz was able to overcome a 2 match deficit and win the next three matches to beat Korea B and take the third spot to cap a clean 1, 2, 3 sweep by Iranian teams in the 2nd Asian Taekwondo Clubs Championship.
